Tarique, Babar, 6 others acquitted from bribery case

A court here today acquitted eight persons including BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman and former state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar of the charges in a case lodged over allegedly taking Tk21 crore in bribes for giving clean chit to Bashundhara Group vice-chairman Shafiat Sobhan Sanvir in Sabbir killing case. The other people, who have been acquitted of the charges, are Miah Nur Uddin Apu, Qazi Salimul Haque Kamal, Ahmed Akbar Sobhan, Shafiat Sobhan, Sadat Sobhan and Abu Sufian.

Govt employees get 9-day Eid holiday

The Advisory Council has approved a proposal for an executive order declaring April 3 (Thursday) as a holiday, following the Eid holidays, allowing government officials and employees to enjoy a continuous break. As a result, government employees will have a nine-day holiday from March 28 to April 5.

Consensus Commission starts dialogue with political parties

The National Consensus Commission opened its dialogues with political parties today (20 March), starting with the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), aiming to build a national consensus on the reform initiatives undertaken by the interim government. Australia to process Bangladeshis’ visas in Dhaka, not Delhi

Australia will now process visas for Bangladeshi citizens through its High Commission in Dhaka, instead of New Delhi. Australian Home Minister Tony Burke informed Bangladesh`s Home Adviser, Lt Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, of this decision during a phone call on Thursday.

HC Justice Khizir Hayat removed

High Court (HC) Justice Khizir Hayat has been removed from his post. A notification, signed by Sheikh Abu Taher, Secretary to the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, was issued on Wednesday. On March 18, he was removed upon order from the President following section 96 of the Constitution.
