Election in Bangladesh this year may be difficult due to unrest, says Nahid

Bangladesh`s interim government has been unable to fully ensure public safety and holding a general election this year will be difficult, Nahid Islam, the head of the newly launched National Citizen Party (NCP), told Reuters. Former prime minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted last August in the wake of mass, sometimes violent, student-led protests. The interim government, headed by Nobel laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus, said this month that elections could be held by the end of 2025 although unrest has continued.

Polls in either Dec or June, depends on parties, says Yunus

Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus announced on Thursday that national elections could be held in December if political parties consent to limited reforms beforehand, or by June 2025 otherwise. Speaking at the state guesthouse Jamuna during a meeting with former US diplomats William B Milam and Jon Danilowicz, Yunus outlined the timeline tied to a forthcoming “July Charter.”

Visiting the Tourist Police Headquarters in the city`s Topkhana Road this afternoon, the home adviser stressed the need for public awareness to curb incidents of mob attacks.
