UN chief Guterres to visit Bangladesh on March 13-16

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres is set to visit Bangladesh from March 13 to 16, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The visit follows an invitation from Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, extended through Khalilur Rahman, High Representative for the Rohingya Issue and Priority Matters, during a meeting with Guterres in New York on February 7.

Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Wednesday urged people not to take law into their own hands. "I will urge people not to take law into their own hands and police to become more active," he told reporters after inaugurating the farmers` cool house initiative and the farmers` mobile app developed by the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Council (BARC) at the Horticulture Centre in Rajalakh area of Savar in the morning.

Chief Adviser`s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam on Wednesday said the way Bangladesh`s economy has made a turnaround within six months is just a `miracle`. "I will tell that a miracle, the way economy has rebounded is just a miracle," he said while addressing Development Journalists` Forum of Bangladesh (DJFB) talk held at the NEC auditorium at the Planning Commission.

President accepts Nahid’s resignation letter

President Mohammed Shahabuddin has accepted the resignation letter of adviser Nahid Islam who stepped down from his position on Tuesday. A gazette notification, signed by Md Mahmudul Hossain Khan, secretary (coordination and reform) to the routine duty of the Cabinet Secretary, was issued on Wednesday. The resignation will come into force soon, the notification reads.

UN to mobilise int’l community to support Bangladesh on Rohingya issue: Guterres

United Nations (UN) Secretary General Antonio Guterres has said that the UN would continue to mobilise the international community to support Bangladesh as a host to the forcibly displaced Rohingyas. In a letter to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus on February 25, Guterres said he shared the Bangladesh chief adviser`s concerns regarding the impact of the Rohingya crisis on Bangladesh and the region, as well as the worsening humanitarian situation in Rakhine.

Bus crash in Thailand kills 18

A bus crashed and killed 18 people in Thailand on Wednesday after the brakes apparently failed as it went down a hill, police said. The vehicle was one of three double-decker buses carrying local government officials on a field trip when it veered off the road in Prachin Buri province, east of the capital Bangkok.
