The UN fact-finding mission has found evidence of ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her associates committing serious human rights violations to suppress the mass uprising. The United Nations Human Rights Office is set to release a fact-finding report this afternoon (12 February) detailing human rights violations during Bangladesh`s student-led uprising in July and August 2024.

Forty-eight people, suspected to be leaders and activists of Awami League, have been arrested in Gazipur on the fourth day of ongoing `Operation Devil Hunt.` The latest drive brought to 309 the number of people so far arrested from both Gazipur city and the district. Of them, 80, 100, and 81 were arrested on the first, second and third day respectively. According to police, Tuesday night`s arrests included eight people from five police stations in Gazipur district and 40 from the metropolitan area.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared on Tuesday the ceasefire in Gaza would end and the military would resume fighting Hamas until it was defeated if the Palestinian militant group did not release hostages by midday Saturday. Following Netanyahu`s ultimatum, Hamas issued a statement renewing its commitment to the ceasefire and accusing Israel of jeopardising it.

The inspector general for the US Agency for International Development was fired on Tuesday, a USAID official said, a day after his office published a report critical of the Trump administration`s effort to eliminate the agency. Paul Martin had served as the agency`s inspector general, a position requiring US Senate confirmation, since December 2023. The USAID official, who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss sensitive matters, said Martin was "removed from his position.

Dhaka, the overcrowded capital city of Bangladesh, has ranked sixth on the list of cities with the worst air quality with an AQI score of 171 at 8am this morning (February 12, 2025). Today`s air was classified as `unhealthy`, referring to the fact that air pollution levels are high enough to cause adverse health effects for some people.

BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas warned that any attempt to delay the national election by pushing for local body elections first would be strongly opposed. "We thank Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus for announcing that the election will be held by December during his meeting with our secretary general yesterday. We hope the election will take place within December, if there is no plot to foil it," he said while addressing a workshop.
