Trainee medical students block Shahbagh
Medical Assistant Training School (MATS) students today (9 February) staged a sit-in in Shahbagh following an earlier announcement of a long march programme to press home their four-point demand. "Students of MATS blocked the Shahbagh-TSC road, leading to traffic congestion surrounding the area. Vehicular movement is slow at the intersection," said Mehedi Shakil, assistant commissioner (traffic) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP)`s Shahbagh zone.

’Operation Devil Hunt’ to continue until devils are finished: Home adviser
The countrywide crackdown `Operation Devil Hunt` will go on until the devils are finished, said Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury. "The operation will target those who are desperate to destabilise the country," he warned today (9 February). Jahangir Alam made the remarks while talking to reporters after inaugurating the newly-built "Mrittika Bhaban" at the Soil Resource Development Institute in Khamarbari area in the capital.

Operation Devil Hunt: 40 arrested in Gazipur
Joint forces have arrested 40 people, suspected to be supporters of Awami League and its associate bodies, from Gazipur since Saturday night to Sunday morning, said police. Superintendent of Police (SP) of Gazipur Chowdhury Jaber Sadek said that the 40 people were rounded up from parts of the district after conducting the `Operation Devil Hunt`.

BNP set to meet CA Yunus tomorrow
A BNP delegation will meet Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus tomorrow (10 February) to express concerns over recent incidents of vandalism across the country, including at Dhanmondi 32. BNP`s top leaders discussed the issue at a Standing Committee meeting on Friday (7 February) and instructed party members to avoid violence, reports Jamuna TV quoting BNP Joint Secretary General Salahuddin Ahmed.

Magnitude 7.6 quake shakes Caribbean, tsunami advisory issued
A magnitude 7.6 quake rattled the Caribbean Sea on Saturday about 130 miles (209 kilometers) off the coast of the Cayman Islands, triggering tsunami warnings, US monitoring agencies said. The US Tsunami Warning System said waves as high as nearly 10 feet (three meters) were possible in some coastal areas of Cuba, while waves of up to three feet could hit Honduras and the Cayman Islands.

Dhaka’s air quality turns ‘very unhealthy’ this morning
Dhaka, the overcrowded capital city of Bangladesh, has ranked the third on the list of cities with the worst air quality with an AQI score of 201 at 8:55am this morning (February 9, 2025). Today`s air was classified as `very unhealthy`, referring to a serious health risk to residents, according to the AQI index. Though Saturday`s air quality was marked as unhealthy with an AQI score of 177, the air turned very unhealthy further on the first working day of the week.
