With strong leadership and strategic planning, Bangladesh can turn challenges into opportunities, fostering a prosperous, equitable, and resilient nation for current and future generations, said a new report yesterday (30 January). The use of digital and AI technologies, along with the establishment of institutions promoting excellence and regulatory reform, will enhance Bangladesh`s competitive position globally, it said.

First phase of Biswa Ijtema begins today

Biswa Ijtema is set to begin today on the bank of the Turag River at Tongi in Gazipur district marking the 58th congregation of Tablig Jamaat beginning, to be held in three phases this year. This year, the Ijtema will be held in three phases. The first phase will be held from January 31 to February 2, the second phase from February 3 to 5 and the third phase from February 14 to 16.

Switzerland to wrap up dev programmes in Bangladesh by 2028

The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) will phase out its bilateral development programmes in Bangladesh, Albania and Zambia by the end of 2028. This decision was based on the actual needs on the ground, Switzerland`s long-term interests (diplomatic and economic) and the added value of Swiss international cooperation compared to other countries.

Bangladeshi girl to return home after 8 years in India

After spending eight years in a home in India, a Bangladeshi girl is set to return home to her family. In 2017, the girl along with her parents were detained near Kolkata airport for illegal entry. The girl was spared from charges as she was a minor (8 years old) at the time and was sent to a home, reports Times of India. Her parents were charged under Section 14 of the Foreigners Act, under which they spent time in prison.

Indian company to sell 200 rail coaches to Bangladesh, expects 20% growth

India`s state-run railway engineering company RITES limited has received an order from Bangladesh to supply 200 railway coaches worth 900 crore rupees. With this order, Rites wants to double the share of revenue and ensure one overseas order each quarter, the Mint reported quoting Chief Managing Director (CMD) of the company Rahul Mithal.

Dhaka’s air turns “unhealthy’’ this morning

the overcrowded capital city of Bangladesh, has ranked the fifth on the list of cities with the worst air quality with an AQI score of 181 at 9:10am this morning (January 31, 2025). Today`s air was classified as `unhealthy`, referring to a health threat, according to the AQI index. However, a very unhealthy air quality prevailed in the densely polluted city over the past few days.
