BNP demands withdrawal of VAT, duty hike, calls for focus on direct taxes
The BNP has urged the interim government to focus on increasing direct taxes instead of raising indirect taxes, demanding the withdrawal of its "imprudent" decision to impose value-added tax (VAT) and supplementary duties on over a hundred products, citing public suffering. Indirect taxes affect people across all income groups almost equally and place an additional burden on the lower-income population, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir stated at a press conference today (18 January).

Interim govt increased VAT ’inconsiderately’: Debapriya
The interim government has "inconsiderately" increased value added tax (VAT) on certain products and services while raising indirect taxes instead of direct taxes, said economist Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, who led the committee responsible for drafting a white paper on the country`s economic situation. Speaking at an event in Dhaka today, he remarked that the country`s growth rate is gradually slowing down as data from the first quarter of the current fiscal year reflects this trend.

Ex-BFIU head Masud Biswas arrested
Masud Biswas, the former head of the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU), has been arrested by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC). The arrest was made during an operation today (18 January) with the assistance of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP). Masud has been taken into custody, said ACC Deputy Director Md Akhtarul Islam.

Israeli cabinet approves Gaza ceasefire accord, due to take effect Sunday
Israel`s cabinet approved a deal with Palestinian fighter group Hamas for a ceasefire and release of hostages in the Gaza Strip, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu`s office said on Saturday, a day ahead of the agreement`s scheduled start. In the early hours of Saturday after meeting for more than six hours, the government ratified the agreement that could pave the way for an end to the 15-month-old war in the Palestinian enclave, which Hamas controls.

The government has sought opinion over July proclamation from all stakeholders who participated in the July mass uprising. "As per the next course of action of the all-party dialogue on July proclamation held on Thursday, opinion is being sought from all stakeholders, including political parties, and those who participated in the uprising," the chief adviser`s press wing said in a statement today.

Dhaka’s air quality 2nd worst in the world this morning
Dhaka has ranked the second on the list of cities with the worst air quality with an AQI score of 291 at 9:01 am Saturday. The air was classified as "very unhealthy", according to the AQI index on Saturday. Pakistan`s Lahore, Vietnam`s Hanoi and India`s Delhi occupied the first, third and fourth spots on the list, with AQI scores of 435, 197 and 186 respectively.
