BNP to strengthen national unity against fascism: Salahuddin

BNP senior leader Salahuddin Ahmed has said that their party`s acting Chairman has instructed them to make every possible effort to maintain national unity in order to resist the rise of fascist forces in the country. He made the comments while speaking to reporters at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after his return from London on Sunday.

SC upholds dismissal of extortion cases against Tarique Rahman

The Appellate Division on Sunday upheld a High Court order that dismissed four extortion cases filed against BNP acting Chairman Tarique Rahman with several police stations in Dhaka. A four-member bench led by Justice Md Ashfaqul Islam passed the order rejecting the leave-to-appeals submitted by the state earlier. Additional Attorney General Barrister Anik R Haq representing the state during the hearing confirmed the matter, saying that the appeals were rejected.

Secretariat building that caught fire reopens after 11 days

The Secretariat building that caught fire in the early hours of 26 December has been reopened after 11 days. All Secretariat officers and employees are allowed to bring their vehicles inside the building premises starting today (5 January), according to media reports. Offices up to the fifth floor of the nine-storey building resumed operations. The fire-damaged sixth to ninth floors, however, remained closed. Abdul Hamid Khan, the secretary of the Public Works Department, visited the burnt floors of Building 7.

EC will ensure everyone’s voting rights: CEC

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin on Sunday said the Election Commission wants to end the people`s deprivation in exercising their voting rights. "We want to remove the fact that they(people) have been deprived of the voting right for so long. We want to remove the pain of their deprivation. We are steadfast in our commitment," he said.

Tulip Siddiq, a UK city minister and niece of ousted Bangladesh prime minister Sheikh Hasina, lived in a property given to her family by an ally of her aunt`s deposed regime in Bangladesh, reports The Sunday Times. According to the report published on 4 January, Tulip used the flat on Finchley Road in Hampstead, north London, after it was given to her for free by her teenage sister, Azmina. The report says Moin Ghani, a Bangladeshi lawyer who has represented Hasina`s government, handed the property to Azmina in 2009.

Dismissed trainee SIs protest in front of Secretariat demanding reinstatement

A large group of dismissed trainee sub-inspectors (SIs) of Bangladesh Police are demonstrating in front of the Bangladesh Secretariat, demanding reinstatement of their jobs. They began their protest at 10am today (5 January) in front of Gate 4 of the secretariat, according to media reports. Between October and November, more than 310 trainees from the 40th (cadet) SI batch of 2023 were dismissed by the authorities for breaching discipline during their training just one month before their graduation.

Fear grips Teknaf as 30 kidnapped in three days

A wave of fear gripped the people of Teknaf upazila, particularly in Baharchhara Union’s Boro Deil area, in Cox`s Bazar as reports of kidnappings continued to surface. Syed Hossain, a mason and the son of the late Abbas Mia, was abducted on Friday evening. According to Syed Hossain`s family, armed criminals descended from the hills, fired blank shots, entered their house, and took him away at gunpoint.

Next polls will be free and fair, CA assures UK MP

Chief Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus today assured British parliamentarian Rupa Huq that the next general election in Bangladesh would be completely free and fair. "People could not vote in the last three elections. There were a fake parliament, fake MPs, and a fake speaker," he told Huq as she called on the Chief Advisor at the state guest house Jamuna here.
