The Bangladesh Awami League, which ruled the country for the past 15 years before being ousted in a mass uprising in August this year, will be able to participate in the next national election if the current government or court does not ban it, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has said.

Janata Bank auctions lands of S Alam Refined Sugar, Super Edible Oil to recover loans

State-owned Janata Bank has put 2,971 decimals of land from S Alam Refined Sugar Industries Limited, a company of the controversial S Alam Group, up for auction to recover outstanding loans. It also put up for auction land worth Tk1,008 crore (as of 30 Nov) belonging to S Alam Super Edible Oil. Participants have to confirm their bid within 23 January. Announcing the land auction through a public notice, Janata Bank stated it is owed Tk1,777 crore by S Alam Refined Sugar. The loan was taken from the Sadharan Bima Bhaban Corporate Branch of the bank in Chattogram.

EC to begin door-to-door voter update on 20 Jan

The Election Commission will begin updating the voter list through a door-to-door campaign starting on 20 January 2025, according to an EC official. "The training programme for officials involved in this update will be completed by 5 January," said the official who spoke to The Business Standard on condition of anonymity.

Inu, Salman 3 others shown arrested in fresh cases

A court today (30 December) showed five people including Hasanul Haque Inu and Salman F Rahman arrested in fresh cases filed over murders and murder attempts that took place during the student-led July-August mass uprising. The three other arrested are- Shahjahan Khan, Zunaid Ahmed Palak and Atiqul Islam. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sharifur Rahman passed the orders as police produced the five accused before the court and pleaded to show them arrested in the cases.

1972 constitution to be buried through July Revolution Declaration: Hasnat

The grave of the Mujibbadi Constitution of 1972 will be created at the same place where the one-point declaration was announced. Two more dengue patients die in 24hrs

Two more deaths were reported from dengue in 24 hours till Sunday morning, raising the number of fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh to 572 this year. According to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), recent fatalities have been reported in the Dhaka division, including one case in the Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC).
