The High Court (HC) has overturned the verdict of a lower court in two cases filed over the (August 21) grenade attack, acquitting all convicts, including BNP`s Acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman and former state minister for home affairs Lutfozzaman Babar. An HC bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayet Hossain delivered the judgement on Sunday.

The "White Paper on State of the Bangladesh Economy" was submitted to Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus today (1 December). Debapriya Bhattacharya, head of the White Paper Committee, and other members of the body submitted the document to the chief adviser at his office in Tejgaon, Dhaka. Last Thursday, Debapriya Bhattacharya said the white paper will recommend measures for the government to boost the confidence of foreign investors and lenders, encouraging them to continue their activities here.

Journalist Munni Saha has been released from the custody of the Detective Branch, just hours after being detained from Kawran Bazar in the capital on Saturday night. She was handed over to her family on payment of a bond shortly after midnight (technically Sunday). Quoting Rezaul Karim Mallick, additional commissioner (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, The Daily Star is reporting she was released under the obscure Section 497 of the CrPC.

Former minister and BNP leader Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury today highlighted the erosion of citizens` rights, saying that when the right to vote is stolen, numerous other rights are lost as a consequence. "Democracy is not just about voting; it`s about the daily accountability of an elected government, which has been absent for the last 15 years due to stolen voting rights," he said while speaking at the inauguration of a daylong event marking the 30-year journey of the Center for Policy Dialogue (CPD).

Many people in Bangladesh believe that the interim government has faced challenges in managing the rising prices of essential commodities compared to the previous Awami League (AL) government, says a survey conducted by Voice of America (VoA) Bangla. The survey, involving 1,000 participants aged 18 and above from eight divisions across the country, revealed that 44.7% of respondents believe the government has performed poorly in controlling the prices of essential commodities such as rice, fish, vegetables, eggs, meat and oil.

Three more deaths were reported from dengue in 24 hours till Saturday morning, raising the number of fatalities from the mosquito-borne disease in Bangladesh to 488 this year. The recent fatalities occurred in the Dhaka South City Corporation.
