Dhaka University closed indefinitely, asked vacates halls by 6 pm
Dhaka University (DU) has been declared closed Wednesday,(17 July), for an indefinite period ‘for students’ safety and ensuring peaceful academic environment’ considering the emerging situation amid protests. A media release, signed by Mahmud Alam, director at the Public Relations Office of the university, said the university’s syndicate committee has taken the decision from an emergency meeting with Vice Chancellor Prof Dr SM Maksud Kamal in the chair.

All primary schools under 8 city corporation areas declared shut indefinitely
All government primary schools under eight city corporation areas of the country have been declared closed for an indefinite period considering the students’ safety, said the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education on Wednesday (17 July) morning. According to press release, signed by Mahbubur Rahman Tuhin, senior information officer of the ministry, academic activities at all government primary schools and other primary schools and learning centres run by Shishu Kallyan Trust and Bureau of Non-Formal Education will remain suspended until further notice.

The authorities of Islamic University in Kushtia declared closed the university for an identified period on Wednesday (17 July) amid the ongoing demonstrations by the students demanding reform in the quota system in government jobs. The decision was made at an emergency syndicate meeting held at the university’s vice-chancellor residence in the morning with VC Professor Shaikh Abdus Salam in the chair.

Some teachers of Dhaka University under the banner of ‘Anti-Repression Teachers’ took position at the entrance of Shahbag police station on Wednesday morning protesting the attacks on the quota reform activists. Initially a group of teachers numbering around 50, including Prof Kamrul Hasan Mamun, Prof Samina Lutfa and Prof Tanjim Uddin Khan, gathered at the Operajeyo Bangla of the university and then moved with a banner towards Shahbagh police station.

Six people including four Pakistanis were killed and nearly 30 wounded in a shooting near a Shiite mosque in the Omani capital Muscat, officials said Tuesday, a rare attack in the otherwise stable Gulf sultanate. Monday`s mosque attack, which has yet to be claimed, came as Shiites this week mark Ashura, an annual day of mourning that commemorates the seventh-century death in battle of Imam Hussein, regarded by the sect as the rightful successor to the Prophet Mohammed.

Israel bombs Gaza after US criticises high civilian toll
Israel kept up its bombing of Gaza Tuesday (16 July), after its key military backer the United States renewed criticism of its ally over the high civilian casualty toll of the war. Residents said Israeli warplanes striking central Gaza and artillery fire hitting the territory`s south, while medics said they pulled multiple bodies from the rubble of the latest bombardment. Hours earlier, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken told two top Israeli officials that casualties among Palestinian civilians "still remain unacceptably high". "We continue to see far too many civilians killed in this conflict," spokesman Matthew Miller said after Blinken meth Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer and National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi.

Six robbers sent to jail in Sunamganj
Six alleged robbers, arrested during separate drives at Dirai upazila in the district, were sent to jail following a court directive on Tuesday (16 July). The arrested were identified as Sujon Ahmed Sebul, 33, Rahibul, 44, Jony Pal, 22, Shapon Mia, 23, Rony Biswas, 25, and Prokash Biswas, 22. All of them, except Sujon Ahmed Sebul, are the residents of Dirai upazila.

Govt rejects apprehension of decline in export
The government today ruled out the apprehension of decline in export income, GDP growth and per capita income due to export data reconciliation. In response to recent media reports on export data, the Ministry of Finance in a press release on Tuesday said that steps have already been taken for ensuring reconciliation between the export data of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) and the Bangladesh Bank.
