Floods return to Sylhet as rivers surge above danger level
Sylhet faces another severe flood crisis as relentless rainfall and upstream surges have caused rivers to rise rapidly, submerging large areas. Over the past two days, six points across three rivers in Sylhet have exceeded danger levels, affecting communities in Companiganj and Gowainghat upazilas. As of Tuesday (18 June) morning, more than 2 lakh people have been affected, with nearly 50,000 residents of Sylhet city experiencing severe waterlogging.

Eid-ul-Azha: Over 1.04 crore animals sacrificed this year
A total of 1,04,08,918 animals wete sacrificed across the country on the occasion of the holy Eid-ul-Azha this year. As many as 3, 67, 106 more animals were slaughtered this year compared to previous year, the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock said in a press release on Tuesday (18 June).

Over 5,000 Syrian refugees deported from Lebanon
The Lebanese government has deported more than 5,000 Syrian illegal migrants from Lebanon’s North Governorate, said Governor Ramzi Nohra. "We have deported more than 5,000 Syrian refugees who were illegally residing in 15 settlements of the North Governorate ... Some of the deportees have returned to Syria, while the rest have been sent to settlements that can accept them," the governor said.

Heavy rainfall is expexted in Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions during 72 hours commencing 6 am on Tuesday (18 June). “ Due to active monsoon heavy (44-88 mm. / 24hrs) to very heavy rainfall (289 mm / 24hrs) likely in Rangpur, Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions,” said Bangladesh Metrological Debarment in a warning message on Tuesday.

Civilian deaths due to armed conflicts around the world soared 72 percent last year, the UN rights chief said Tuesday (18 June), voicing alarm at the proportion of women and children killed. "In 2023, data gathered by my Office shows the number of civilian deaths in armed conflict soared by 72 percent," Volker Turk told the opening of a United Human Rights Council session, adding that data indicated "the proportion of women killed in 2023 doubled and that of children tripled".

Child dies from snakebite in Manikganj
A minor child died from a venomous snakebite in Harirampur upazila of Manikganj on Monday (17 June ). Local Union Parishad member Md. Ali Hossen confirmed the matter. The deceased was identified as Sopnomoy, son of Bhavotosh from Kalai (Monirishi Para) village in the upazila. He was one and a half years old.
