Sweden’s Ambassador to Bangladesh, Alexandra Berg von Linde, said Sweden stands with the 4.6 million people affected by Cyclone Remal, which has displaced 800,000 people in southwestern Bangladesh.

Woman killed as train hits auto-rickshaw in Habiganj
A 50-year-old woman was killed and three others injured when a train hit a CNG-run auto-rickshaw on Laskarpur level crossing in Sayestaganj upazila of Habiganj district on Wednesday (12 June). The deceased was identified as Phulbanu, wife of Abdullah Mia of Uttar Charhamua village in Sadar upazila. What was supposed to be the Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE) Tower at plot no. 27 on road no. 17 in the capital`s Banani area has now become Hotel Sarina. ‘Touching just cow rope costs Tk 1 lakh!’
Emdad Hossain came to the capital’s Kamalapur cattle market two days ago with 40 cows from Sirajganj. When some buyers asked him the price of a cow on Tuesday afternoon, he replied, “Tk 2.4 lakh.” The figure surprised them and they asked Emdad why it was so high. Emdad replied ironically, “Even if you just touch the cow rope, that will cost you Tk 1 lakh. Each of the cows I have here costs more than Tk 2 lakh.” He assumed that the prices of most of the cows in that market are more than Tk 1 lakh. He said many will bring small cows to the market two to three days before Eid from the districts near Dhaka.

Malawi announces state funeral for vice president
The Malawi government said Wednesday (12 June) that Vice President Saulos Chilima will be honored with a state funeral after he died in a plane crash along with eight other people. President Lazarus Chakwera had already announced 21 days of national mourning on Tuesday, when the wreckage of the small military plane carrying Chilima and a former first lady was discovered in a mountainous area in the country`s north. Flags will fly at half-staff across the southern African nation during the period of mourning. Chakwera has appointed a ministerial committee to oversee preparations for Chilima`s state funeral, the government said in a statement. No date was announced.
