This year`s maiden hajj flights from Chattogram will start from May 14. Biman`s Boeing 717, carrying 419 pilgrims, will depart from Shah Amanat International Airport for Madinah at 3:50 am on May 14, Biman`s Chattogram district manager Md Shahdat Hossain confirmed. This year, 22 direct flights will be operated from Chattogram to Saudi Arabia for the transportation of pilgrims, he added. Of them, 20 flights will go directly to Jeddah and two flights will go to Madinah.

Worker killed, 3 injured in Sirajganj rice mill boiler blast

A worker was killed and three others sustained injuries in a boiler explosion at a rice mill in Kamarkhand upazila of Sirajganj district early on Friday (3 May). The deceased was identified as Fazal Ali, 26, son of Robial Hossain of Jamtoil Paschim Para of the upazila. The injured were admitted to a local hospital. The explosion occurred at the rice mill around 5 am when rice was put on the boiler machine, leaving four workers injured, said Md. Rezaul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Kamarkhand Police Station.

College student gang-rape in Natore: convict arrested from Dhaka

Members of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive arrested a fugitive convict who was sentenced to death in a case filed over the gang-raped of a college student in 2012. RAB arrested Sabbir alias Abu Sayed from the airport area of Dhaka at midnight on Thursday (2 May). Tipped off, a team of Natore RAB camp conducted a drive in the area and arrested Sabbir with the help of RAB-1. According to the prosecution, Sabbir was in a relationship with a college student of Chandai village in Baraigram upazila. On October 19, 2012, Sabbir took the girl to Kalam Mirzapur village. Later, he along with his friends raped the girl near Mirzapur Eidgah.

DNCC mayor distributes umbrella, water, saline among rickshaw pullers

Dhaka North City Corporation Mayor Atiqul Islam on Friday (3 May) distributed umbrella, bottled water and saline among rickshaw pullers to protect them from scorching heat as the county continues to experience a heat wave for the past few days. He made the distribution at sector No-4 in Dhaka’s Uttara on Friday morning. Mayor said, "The heat wave is getting worse day by day. Every day the suffering of those who have to go out for livelihood increases. People with limited income, especially rickshaw pullers, suffer even more.” He said the city corporation is providing umbrellas so that they can at least stay in the shade of the umbrella. Atiqul said all the registered rickshaws under the DNCC will be delivered to this umbrella in phases.

Four killed in Cumilla lightning strikes

Four people were killed by lightning strikes in four upazilas of the district yesterday (2 May). They died in the upazilas of Chandina, Burichang, Debidwar and Sadar South. The deceased were identified as Mokhlesh Rahman, 60, of Dhamti village of Debidwar upazila, Alam Hossain, 22, of Pachora village of Burichang upazila, Atiqul Islam, 52, of Sahapur area of Sadar Dakshin upazila and Delwar Hossain, 40 of Simantapur village of Chandina upazila of the district. This incident of lightning happened from 4:30 pm to midnight on Thursday. According to the district police sources, Mokhlesur Rahman and Alam Hossain died in lightning while they were harvesting their paddy.

Duet students, transport workers clash in Gazipur

Bus movement on the Dhaka-Gazipur route has remained suspended since Friday (3 May) morning following a clash between students of Dhaka University of Engineering and Technology (Duet) and transport workers in Gazipur Sadar upazila on Thursday night.
