Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Thursday (2 May) said she wants free, fair and neutral upazila election so people can elect their representatives of their choices. "I want uninfluenced, free, fair and neutral upazila elections. The winners of the election are welcomed. They will be winners whom people want. Awami League has come to power as the people wanted," she said. The premier made the remarks while replying to a series of question at a media briefing about the outcome of her recent six-day official visit to Thailand at her official Ganabhaban residence here. She said her government has been working to make the electoral process more pro-people and transparent.

The bodies of eight Bangladeshi nationals who died while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe and subsequently drowned near the coast of Tunisia arrived in the country on Thursday (2 May) noon. A flight carrying the carcasses landed the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport around 12:30 pm. On February 14, a boat, carrying 52 passengers and a sailor from the coast of Zuwarah on its way to Europe, sank off the Tunisian coast, leaving nine people dead. BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is currently undergoing treatment at Evercare Hospital in the capital, was shifted to a cabin from the Coronary Care Unit (CCU) on Thursday (2 May). "Madam was previously in the CCU. The medical board has now shifted her to the cabin. She is receiving treatment under the close supervision of doctors in the cabin," Khaleda`s personal physician Prof AZM Zahid Hossain told UNB. In response to a question, Zahid said the BNP chief underwent several urgent tests on Wednesday night. “Based on the test reports, the medical board is now giving her medical treatment.”

Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) forecast rain or thundershowers in parts of the country inclduing Dhaka in 24 hours commencing 9 am on Thursday. “Rain or thunder showers accompanied by temporary gusty or squally wind is likely at a few places over Chattogram and Sylhet divisions and at one or two places over Dhaka, Mymensingh and Barishal divisions with hails at isolated places,” said a Met office bulletin. A court here on Thursday (2 April) granted bail to Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus in a case over embezzling Tk 25.22 crore of the Grameen Telecom Workers` welfare fund. The hearing date for forming charges against Dr. Yunus and 13 other accused in the case has been postponed to June 2. Dr. Yunus`s lawyer Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the development. Today was the date for the hearing, but the court granted more time after Yunus’s lawyer appealed for time.

Over 1,000 pro-Palestinian protesters have been arrested in recent days according to U.S. media reports, as the anti-war demonstrations at over 20 American universities continued on Tuesday (30 April). Some schools including Columbia University, where the protests initially erupted, have seen a further intensification of the protests, while on some other campuses, the situation appears to be cooling down. Early Tuesday, dozens of protesters at Columbia University`s Manhattan campus moved furniture and metal barricades to block the entrance of Hamilton Hall, one of several buildings occupied by students during the 1968 civil rights and anti-Vietnam War protests.

At least twelve shops were gutted in a major fire that broke out at a market in Chandpur`s Sadar upazila in the small hours of Wednesday (1 May). At least 10 people suffered minor injuries while trying to tame the blaze. The identities of the injured could not be known immediately. Locals said the fire broke out at a shop in Baghra Bazar of Bagadi Union of the Upazila around 2:45am and it soon engulfed the adjoining shops.

This April was the hottest on record, according to a statement released by Bangladesh`s weather agency on Wednesday (1 May). Heatwaves are becoming longer, more frequent, and more intense due to climate change, according to a large body of evidence. The unbearable heat last month prompted Bangladesh`s government to close schools across the country, keeping an estimated 32 million students at home. "This year the heatwave covered around 80% of the country.
