Due to Excessive Heat Wave Primary schools to remain closed till 2 May
Classes of all government primary schools will remain closed till Thursday (2 May) due to the severe heatwave sweeping over the country. The Ministry of Primary and Mass Education announced a press release on Monday (29 April). All schools, colleges, madrasas, and technical education institutions in five districts including Dhaka remained closed today due to the ongoing heatwave. Schools and colleges across the country which were closed due to heatwave conditions reopened on Sunday (28 April) although the sweltering heat is unlikely to abate soon.

Tipu-Prity murder : AL leader Ashraf, 32 others indicted
A Dhaka court on Monday (29 April) framed charges against 33 accused in case over the killing of Awami League leader Zahidul Islam Tipu and a female college student in Shahjahanpur area around two years back. The trial in the case began formally through framing the charges. Dhaka Special Judge Court-Judge Ali Hossain passed the order after rejecting an appeal for excluding the names of the accused from the charges. The court also set May 21 to record testimony of the witnesses in the case, public prosecutor Md Rafik Uddin said.

Three Venezuelan activists have been arrested after participating in a campaign rally with opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, her party said Sunday (28 April), adding to growing concern over a crackdown on dissent by President Nicolas Maduro`s government ahead of the July 28 election. Ambar Marquez and Victor Castillo, members of Machado`s campaign team in the state of Portuguesa, were arrested on Sunday, a day after opposition activist Oscar Castaneda was also detained -- without comment from authorities.

Blinken to visit Israel, Jordan on new Mideast trip
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will visit Israel and Jordan on a trip through Wednesday, the State Department announced, after the US and Israeli leaders discussed hostage-release talks. Blinken will travel to both countries, a State Department official confirmed as the top US diplomat refuelled Sunday in Ireland on his way to a previously announced stop in Saudi Arabia. The trip was announced after President Joe Biden and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu spoke by telephone about ongoing talks to halt Israel`s offensive in the Gaza Strip in return for the release of hostages.

Burkina Faso has suspended several international news organisations, some of them for an indefinite period, said a statement from communications regulator the CSC. Heat affects mango, litchi yield, price may rise
The yield of mango and litchi has been adversely affected due to the ongoing heatwave across the country. Indian citizen arrested in Phulbari border area
Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested one Indian citizen from Balarhat border area under Phulbari upazila of Kurigram district. The police sent him to Kurigram jail through the court yesterday (April 28). The arrested citizen was identified as Badol Mia (27), son of Jahidul Mia of the border village Natkobari Nayarhat under Dinhata thana in Cooch Behar district of West Bengal province in India.

The Greater Chattogram Public Transports` Owners and Workers Unity called off the 48-hrs long strike they called on yesterday after 12 hours on Sunday (28 April) afternoon. The announcement came from the Greater Chattogram Public Transports` Owners and Workers Unity after a meeting with district administration officials on Sunday afternoon. Manjur Alam Chowdhury, the association`s convener, announced it saying, "Considering public interest at the request of the district administrator, we have ended the 48-hour ongoing strike. We thank the district administrator for accepting our demands. If such a situation arises again, we will call for a strike again."

After witnessing a downward trend in three sessions, stocks on Sunday rebounded in the Dhaka and Chittagong stock exchanges as investors remained active on sector-wise issues. After witnessing volatility, DSEX, the prime index of the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE), went up by 97.36 points or 1.76 per cent to settle at 5,615.84. Mexico bus crash leaves 14 dead, 31 injured
At least 14 people died and 31 others were injured in a road accident in Mexico on Sunday (28 April), the authorities announced. The accident took place in the state of Mexico, on the outskirts of the capital, when a bus overturned on the roadway, the local safety secretariat said. "Preliminary figures put the death toll at 14, with a further 31 injured," the same source said. Road accidents have been on the rise in Mexico since 2020. A total of 377,231 claims were recorded

Journalist and writer Sohel Atol received the literature award in the story-novel category this year. He won this literary award for his biography of singer Asif Akbar "Akbar Fifty Not Out". The award was announced at the organization`s biennial conference at the National Press Club on Sunday (28 April).
