46 members of Myanmar border guards take shelter in Bangladesh

Amid a conflict between the Myanmar military and the armed rebel group in Myanmar’s Rakhine, 46 members of Border Guard Police (BGP) took shelter again in Bangladesh on Wednesday (17 April), the authorities said. So far, a total of 260 BGP members have taken refuge in Bangladesh, said Shariful Islam, public relations officer (PRO) of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

A former union parishad (UP) member was injured in firing by Indian Border Security Force (BSF) on the Lalmonirhat border near Aditmari upazila on Tuesday (16 April) night. The injured is identified as Saiful Islam Nannu, 50, son of late Gani Mia of Dulali village under Velabari Union of Aditmari upazila. He is a former member of Velabari Union Parishad.

BB re-fixes interest rates under SREUP

The Bangladesh Bank (BB) has re-fixed the interest rate on the pre-finance facility under the support safety retrofits and environmental upgrades programme (SREUP). “The interest rate for pre-financing facility to all new sub-loans under SREUP has been re-fixed to a maximum of 7 per cent per annum, while the interest rate on already sanctioned prevailing sub-loan will remain at 5 per cent per annum,” said a central bank circular issued on Tuesday.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) said on Tuesday (16 April) it expects global oil prices to decrease and average $78.60 per barrel this year and $67.50 in 2029, but warned about upside risks to this outlook. "Futures markets suggest that oil prices will slide by 2.5% year-over-year to average $78.60 per barrel in 2024 and will continue to fall to $67.50 in 2029. Risks to this price outlook are balanced.
