The National Moon Sighting Committee will sit on Tuesday (9 April) to fix the date of Eid-ul-Fitr, the biggest religious festival of Muslims. The meeting will be held in the conference room of the Islamic Foundation`s Baitul Mukarram office in the capital around 6:30 pm after Maghrib prayers, said a press release of Islamic Foudnation on Monday. NRBC-SKS Foundation embezzle Tk 3,500cr

Serious allegations of corruption and irregularities, including loan fraud, embezzlement, commission trading, and illegal recruitment, have surfaced around the activities of the partnership sub-branch of NRBC Bank and SKS Foundation. Loan irregularities amounting to approximately Tk 3,343 crore in the name of microfinance partnership banking have occurred due to the misrepresentation of the microcredit scheme launched under the sub-branch. It has been alleged that 131 sub-branches of NRBC Bank have strategically been controlled by the SKS Foundation, and crores of taka have been embezzled through the directors` vested interests in the name of decoration.

Attacks on Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant significantly increase accident risk

The head of the U.N.’s atomic watchdog agency on Sunday condemned a Ukrainian drone strike on one of six nuclear reactors at the Russian-controlled Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant in Ukraine, saying such attacks “significantly increase the risk of a major nuclear accident." In a statement on the social media platform X, Rafael Mariano Grossi confirmed at least three direct hits against the ZNPP main reactor containment structures took place. “This cannot happen,” he said. Road crashes leave 2 dead in Chattogram

Fire guts 1O houses in Chandpur

At least 10 houses were gutted in a major fire that broke out at a residential home in Sendra village of Hajiganj upazila on Sunday (7 April) afternoon. Police recover bodies of father, son from Dhaka’s Agargaon

Storm kills two, damages houses in Bhola

Two people were killed in Lalmohan upazila and over hundred houses damaged by a storm in the district on Sunday (7 April) morning. The deceased were identified as Haris, 68, and Bachchu, 40. Both were the residents of Lalmohan upazila. Lalmohan Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Toihidul Islam said Haris died in a mud slide during the storm while Bachchu died as a thunderstorm hit him.

An elderly man was killed as a truck crushed him in Ghatail upazila of the district early on Sunday (7 April) The deceased was identified as Bablu, 70, of Atharodana village in the upazila. He was a village doctor. Officer-in-Charge of Ghatail Thana Mohammad Abu Salam Mia said the accident occurred early morning in front of the victim’s house on Tangail-Mymensing Road when he was going to village mosque for Fajr prayers. Bablu doctor died on the spot, the OC added.

15 shops gutted in fire in Bogura

A total of 15 shops were gutted in a fire at Shapla Hawkers Market in the town on Sunday (7 April). The fire originated at around 7:30 am at the hawkers market in Station Road area. Being informed, eight fire fighter units rushed to the spot and brought the fire under control after two hours. Assistant Director of district Fire Service and Civil Defence Monjil Haque said causes behind the fire could not be known immediately. Businessmen estimated that the loss would be Tk one and a half crore.
