3 killed in road accident in Afghanistan

Three people died and four others sustained injuries in a road crash in northern Afghanistan`s Jawzjan province, state-run Bakhtar News Agency has reported. The accident occurred after two vehicles collided in Faizabad district along the highway linking Jawzjan with neighboring Balkh province at around 6 p.m. on Sunday (24 March), local police said. Reckless driving on congested roads and lack of traffic signs on dilapidated highways, according to Afghans, often claim the lives of travelers in Afghanistan.

Maize harvesting has brought smiles to the faces of 20,000 farmers in the Nilphamari Char areas as the price of maize has increased from Tk 1,300 to Tk 1,500 per maund (1 maund = 40 kg). With the rise in international market prices, farmers have enjoyed unexpected returns from their maize cultivation. This year, in the district`s 6 upazilas, the target was to cultivate maize on 26,555 hectares of land, but this has increased to 28,323 hectares. The Nilphamari Agricultural Extension Department informed The Daily Messenger that an additional 1,768 hectares have been cultivated beyond the initial target. Abdul Jalil, a farmer from Charkharibari village in Tepakharibari union, shared with The Daily Messenger that although his yield was slightly lower this year, he was content with the price of corn. He explained that to cultivate 110-140 maunds of maize per acre, he spent Tk 35,000-45,000 on irrigation, fertilizers, and pesticides.

Sotheby`s, which was founded in London close to 300 years ago but is now headquartered in New York, recently organised an auction titled ‘Modern and Contemporary South Asian Art’, where these two paintings were auctioned at record prices. According to the Sotheby`s website, one of the two paintings, ‘Untitled (Couple),’ which depicts a Santal couple (Oil on canvas, 1963), sold for $381,000, or around Tk 4,16,29,622 (Tk 4 crore 16 lakh 29 thousand 622) based on today`s USD to BDT exchange rate ($1 = BDT 109.26).

The government has projected the daily demand for electricity in the upcoming peak season at 17,800MW, but meeting this will be a big challenge amid the ongoing dollar crisis as expensive fuel has to be imported to generate this huge amount of power.
