Foreign Minister and Joint General Secretary of Bangladesh Awami League Hasan Mahmud has said India`s Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) is their internal matter. "As Bangladesh is a neighboring country, we are keeping an eye on the matter," he said on Saturday (16 March). Hasan made the remarks when journalists wanted to know about Bangladesh`s position regarding the law during a view exchange meeting in the city. The Citizenship Amendment Act provides a fast track to naturalization for Hindus, Parsis, Sikhs, Buddhists, Jains, and Christians who fled to Hindu-majority India from Afghanistan, Bangladesh and Pakistan before Dec. 31, 2014.

Tahmina Shabnam, mother of Jagannath University student Fairuz Abantika who died by suicide on Friday night, has demanded justice for her daughter’s death. “My husband died a year ago. Last night my daughter Fairuz died. I can`t bear this grief. I have another son. If no action is taken against those responsible for my daughter`s death, I will end my life along with my son,” said the wailing mother at her home at Bagichagaon of Cumilla city on Saturday (16 March).

Sri Lanka`s economy rebounded strongly in the fourth quarter of 2023 from the island nation`s unprecedented financial crisis as tourism arrivals rose, the government said on Saturday(16 March). The New York judge presiding over Donald Trump`s trial for allegedly covering up hush money payments linked to extramarital affairs ordered a delay on Friday(15 March) in proceedings that had been scheduled to get underway on March 25. "Trial on this matter is adjourned for 30 days from the date of this letter on consent of the People," Judge Juan Merchan said in a court filing that will push the trial to at least mid-April.

20,000 farmers in Char area of the district are happy as they got better yield and higher prices than previous years in Nilphamari. This year, the price of early maize is from Tk 1,300 to Tk 1,500 per maund (40 kg). As the price of maize in the international market has gone up, farmers are making windfalls by selling the produced maize. This year, in 6 upazilas of the district, 26 thousand 555 hectares of land has been set as a target, but with an increase, 28 thousand 323 hectares of land have been cultivated. Sources in the Nilphamari Agricultural Extension Department told The Daily Messenger that 1,768 hectares more than the target area has been cultivated.

One of the 35 victims who sustained burn injuries in a gas cylinder blast in Kaliakair upazila of Gazipur on Wednesday, succumbed to his injuries while undergoing treatment at a Dhaka hospital on Friday (15 March).
