Muslim devotees from across the world are coming into Saudi Arabia in large numbers taking advantage of the holy month of Ramadan contributing to huge crowd at the two holiest cities- Makkah and Madinah. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) is witnessing a growing number of Umrah pilgrims from countries around the world, including from Bangladesh, since the beginning of Ramadan.

Investors turning away from savings certificates
Pressured by soaring inflation, a significant portion of the middle class has started depleting their savings. Furthermore, banks and financial institutions are presently offering higher returns compared to savings bonds. As a result, ordinary investors are gradually diverting their investments away from savings certificates. According to Bangladesh Bank, in the first month (January) of this year, savings certificates were sold to the tune of Tk 7,964 crore, and Tk 9,251 crore must be paid for the interest-principal of the savings certificates sold earlier. As a result, the net sales of National Savings Certificates decreased by Tk 1,287 crore. In other words, customers are not reinvesting in savings certificates.

200 metric tonnes of potatoes imported from India through Benapole port
In an effort to control the rising prices of food items, potato imports from India have begun through Benapole Port. On Thursday, 200 metric tonnes of potatoes arrived at Benapole Port from India via Petrapole Port in eight trucks. The port Director Rezaul Karim confirmed the import of potatoes. Previously, on December 2, 74 tonnes of potatoes were imported in three trucks.

Sri Lanka captain Kusal Mendis put Bangladesh into bat first after winning the toss in the second ODI on Friday (15 March) at Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chattogram. N’ganj High School ad hoc committee cancellation instructions suspended
Narayanganj District Council Chairman Chandan Sheel is serving as the governing body president of this school. On January 24 of this year, an ad hoc committee of 4 members of the governing body was again formed. In this, Chandan Sheel was appointed as the chairperson, teacher representative Mahbubur Rahman, parent representative Delwara Begum Maya and head teacher as members. Later, the Appellate Division of the Bangladesh Supreme Court suspended the directive to quash the committee for 8 weeks. Appellate Division Justice M Enayetur Rahim gave the order on Monday.

Manipulators target shares of debut companies
Capital market manipulators have adopted a new strategy, now targeting shares of debut companies, particularly those with unproductive and weak foundations. This shift in tactics has seen manipulation aimed at four out of the five companies that made their debut this year. Data from the Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE) reveals that these manipulators have withdrawn hundreds of crores of taka from investors by artificially inflating share prices by two to five times within a mere two to three weeks post-debut or listing.

Over 38,000 children work in 5 hazardous sectors across Bangladesh: BBS
A survey conducted by the Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics revealed 38,008 children, aged between 5 to 17 years, are working in five hazardous sectors across Bangladesh. A majority of these children, precisely 97.5%, are male, reveals the Child Labor Survey 2023 released on Thursday (14 March). The Government of Bangladesh has officially recognised 43 sectors as hazardous, but the BBS, after consultations with stakeholders, chose to focus on five key sectors for this survey.
