A fire broke out at S Alam Refining Sugar Industries Limited at Isanagar in Karnaphuli upazila of Chattogram on Monday (4 March). Shoaib Hossain Munshi, warehouse inspector of Karnaphuli Fire Service, said the fire broke out at the sugar mill, owned by S Alam group, around 4 pm and spread soon.

HC orders forming committee to probe Bailey Road building fire

A High Court division bench on Monday (4 March) ordered to form a committee headed by the home secretary to submit a probe report regarding the devastating fire incident that took place in the capital`s Bailey Road on Thursday night. The court also issued a ruling asking why it would not be declared illegal not to keep fire extinguishing systems in the buildings of the capital including schools, colleges and shopping malls as per the law. A High Court Division Bench comprising Justice Naima Haider and Justice Qazi Zeenat Haque passed the order today following a hearing on two separate writs.

50 lakh families to get 1.5 lakh tonnes of rice in Ramadan: Food Minister

The government is planning to provide 1.5 lakh tonnes of rice to 50 lakh families under the Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) program in the upcoming Ramadan, said Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder on Monday (4 March). The dealers were asked to collect rice from March 1 which will be distributed within March 10, he said while talking to reporters after attending the deputy commissioners’ conference at Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the city.

IGP wants greater rate of conviction in cases

Inspector General of Police (IGP) Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun on Sunday (3 March) directed senior police officers to increase the conviction rate in cases filed with police. He also directed the field-level police officers to ensure the punishment of the perpetrators in sensitive cases.The IGP came up with the remarks while addressing the first session of the last day of Police Week-2024 with senior police officers in Dhaka. Expressing satisfaction over the punishment rate of the cases currently, he said due to the excellence of the overall efficiency and professionalism of the police, the conviction rate of cases across the country has increased from 17 percent in 2022 to 28 percent in December 2023.
