Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Tuesday (30 January) said the lack of biomaterials with a reliable clinical data infrastructure is one of the major reasons why Bangladesh is under-represented in wider medical research. The prime minister said this in a video message that was played at the roundtable titled "Biobanking with Bangladesh: A joint approach to disease management and prevention", a collaborative initiative taken by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University, the Bangladesh embassy in Brussels and the European Union.

BNP says Moyeen picked up from procession, police say safety issue

BNP said on Tuesday (30 January) its standing committee member Moyeen Khan was picked up by law enforcers in the capital, but police said the BNP leader was just removed from the "black flag" procession he was leading for his safety. Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday (29 January) directed the authority concerned to reduce import duty on four essential items - rice, edible oil, sugar and date- ahead of the upcoming Ramadan. The directive came from the Cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her office in the city. "The Prime Minister has given a clear directive to decrease the duty on four items - edible oil, sugar, rice and date - on the occasion of the upcoming Ramadan, said Cabinet Secretary Md Mahbub Hossain while briefing reporters at the Secretariat.

Black flag processions from BNP to mark opening of 12th Jatiya Sangshad

Qatar, US sign deal to supply LNG to Bangladesh

QatarEnergy and U.S.-based Excelerate Energy (EE.N) signed a 15-year agreement on Monday (29 January) to supply 1 million metric tons per year (mtpa) of liquefied natural gas (LNG) to Bangladesh beginning in January 2026. The deal is the latest in a series state-owned QatarEnergy has with European and Asian partners tied to its massive North Field expansion project, which is expected to lift Qatar`s LNG production to 126 mtpa by 2027 from 77 mtpa now.
