12th National Election: Vote casting ends, counting begins

The voting of 12th parliamentary elections has officially ended at 4.00pm Sunday (7 January). Voting began across all the polling centres under 299 constituencies at 8.00am and continued without a break until 4.00pm. Counting will begin soon, following the end of voting.

27% votes cast across Bangladesh till 3pm : EC secretary

At least 27% of votes have been cast across the country till 3pm, said Election Commissioner Md Jahangir Alam. The 12th national election began on Sunday (7 January) with people queuing up outside polling centres, despite the ongoing hartal called by BNP-Jamaat and a few other political parties.

(I think) whether the people accept the election or not, and that is important to me," she said.

‘Voter turnout relatively higher in rural areas compared to Dhaka’

Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen has said voter turnout is relatively higher in rural areas compared to Dhaka, and expressed optimism over healthy turnout of voters as the day progresses. “I couldn`t cast my vote for many years as I was abroad. My father used to come with my mother. As my father passed away few years back, I came here to cast my vote with my mother,” he told reporters after casting his vote at the Teachers Training Centre under Dhaka-10 constituency.

Jatiya Party used as sacrificial lamb in polls : GM Quader

Jatiya Party (JP) Chairman GM Quader on Sunday (7 January) said a one-party rule will be established in the country by sacrificing JP candidates at the end. He said his party is being used as a sacrificial lamb for this purpose. "As we have joined the election, there is no scope of boycotting it right now. We have to announce programmes after getting the polls results," Quader said while replying to a query from reporters after overseeing polls in Rangpur-3 constituency.

Crude bomb blast at Jashore polling centre injures 1

Unidentified miscreants hurled a crude bomb at a polling centre in Jashore-3 constituency. The incident happened at 7:15 a.m. on Sunday (7 January) morning at Shankarpur Secondary School polling centre in the constituency. Assistant Platoon Commander of Bangladesh Ansar, Maruf Hossain, who was in charge of the polling centre security, was injured in the explosion. Other law enforcers took him to Jashore General Hospital for treatment.
