National Elections : Campaigning is over, now wait for polls
The campaign for the 12th Jatiya Sangsad(JS) elections ended with violations of the code of conduct and violence. Now the wait is only two days. The much awaited polls on January 7. After receiving the symbols on December 18, the candidates officially started campaigning. And on the last day, Thursday, rival candidates conducted vigorous campaigning across the country. Clashes also occurred between the supporters of the candidates at different places on this day. So far three people have died in the election conflict.

4 polling centres in Rajshahi set on fire
Four polling centres set up in schools were set on fire in three constituencies of Rajshahi early Friday (5 January). Miscreants used petrol bombs to set the polling stations on fire. School furniture, including books and papers, were burnt in the fire. Two hand bombs were also found in front of a polling station. The affected polling centres are Mohonpur High School in Mohonpur upazila for the Rajshahi-3 constituency.

Fire service forms central monitoring cell ahead of election
The Directorate of Fire Service and Civil Defence (FSCD) has formed a `central monitoring and co-ordination cell` to deal with any accident, including violence and fire ahead of the January 7 national election. The cell will work to collect information of accidents from any part of the country including Dhaka and coordinate with the central control room of the FSCD as well, said Anwarul Islam, warehouse inspector of FSCD headquarters media cell.

Launch collides head-on with cargo ship in Chandpur
A woman went missing and a man was injured, after a passenger launch collided with and a cargo ship in the Meghna River in Chandpur, due to reduced visibility caused by dense fog on Thursday night. Bangladesh reported 21new Covid-19 cases in 24 hours till Thursday (4 January) morning. With the new numbers, the country`s total Covid-19 caseload rose to 2,046,367, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). The official death toll from the disease remained unchanged at 29,477 as no new fatalities were reported during this period.

DMP imposes restrictions on vehicular movement for polls
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has imposed some restrictions on vehicular movement with a view to holding the January 7 parliamentary election in a free, fair and peaceful manner. According to a media release signed by DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman on Thursday (4 January) evening restrictions have been imposed on the movement of taxi cabs, pickups, microbuses, trucks and so on in Dhaka metropolitan area from 12 am on January 6 to midnight on January 7 ahead of the national election.
