Sheikh Hasina to address nation Thursday

Awami League (AL) President Sheikh Hasina will address the nation on Thursday (4 January) ahead of 12th national parliamentary election slated for January 7. Awami League (AL) General Secretary and Road Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader said this at a press conference at the party president’s political office in Dhanmondi on Wednesday (January 3).

‘On Jan 7, world will witness a great election in Bangladesh’

Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader on Wednesday (3 January) said that the Election Commission is able to act independently and authoritatively, which is why the electoral code of conduct is being strictly maintained. Speaking this afternoon at the party president’s office in Dhaka’s Dhanmondi, he further said that wherever the electoral code of conduct is being violated, the Election Commission is taking action. There is no interference or obstruction from the government, and Awami League President and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is firm on this matter, he said.

Armed forces deployed across the country

Armed forces were deployed across the country this morning, ahead of the national election slated for January 7. Armed forces will remain deployed from January 3 to January 10 to ensure peace and order before, during, and after the election day, said an Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) media release on Tuesday (2 January). The armed forces are being deployed to assist the local civil administration in holding a free, fair, and peaceful election in Bangladesh as per Section 126 of the constitution`s "In Aid to the Civil Power".

Covid : Nat’l advisory committee recommends wearing masks, precautions

Amid the surge of new JN.1 Covid variant globally, the National Technical Advisory Committee (NTAC) on Covid-19 has suggested the authorities concerned to take necessary initiatives, including mask wearing, to prevent spread of the virus. The committee came up with four recommendations in its 65th meeting held on Tuesday with Dr Mohammad Shahidullah, president of the NTAC, in the chair, said a press release.

Tetulia records season’s lowest temperature at 7.4°C

Tetulia of Panchagarh district, on Wednesday (3 January), recorded this winter`s lowest temperature so far in the country at 7.4 degrees Celsius. A mild to moderate cold wave is sweeping over the districts of Dinajpur, Panchagarh, and Nilphamari, and it may continue. Dhaka recorded 14.9 degrees Celsius during this period, according to the Met office. Moderate to dense fog may prevail over the country during midnight to morning, and it may continue till noon at places across the country.

BNP lawyers’ court boycott a ’political stunt’ : Law Minister

Law Minister Anisul Huq labeled pro-BNP lawyers’ court boycott programme as a "mere political maneuver". He said, "I see the court boycott by BNP lawyers as merely a political stunt. It holds no significance." He told this during a brief exchange with media at Akhaura railway station in Brahmanbaria today (3 January). "The courts are preoccupied with their business. "BNP made a mistake by involving them in political activities," he continued.

Plane catches fire on runway at Japan’s Haneda airport

A plane burst into flames on the runway of Tokyo`s Haneda airport on Tuesday (2 January), with news reports saying it hit another aircraft after landing. NHK TV reported that all passengers aboard, believed to have been about 400 people, got out safely. Local TV video showed a large eruption of fire and smoke from the side of the Japan Airlines plane as it taxied on a runway. The area around the wing then caught fire.

Over the past five years, honey production has witnessed an astounding increase of almost 600 percent. This staggering growth trend suggests an estimated production of approximately 15,000 metric tonnes of honey in the ongoing season.

Dr Yunus sued for not paying workers’ dues : Hasan

Information and Broadcasting Minister and Awami League Joint General Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud on Tuesday (2 January) said the labourers sued Dr Yunus as he didn’t pay dues of the workers. The minister told reporters while replying to a query at his secretariat office after unwrapping the cover of the book ‘Shoronarthir Jobanbandi 1971’ authored by Popy Debi Thapa, a researcher of Press Institute Bangladesh (PIB).

Price of 12 kg cylinder hiked to Tk1433

The price of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has been increased to Tk 119.40 per kg for the month of January, from Tk 117.02 in December, said BERC. Retail consumers will have to pay an additional Tk 2.41 per kg of LPG from 6 pm on Tuesday (2 January), according to Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC).
