BNP’s 48-hour nationwide blockade underway

The latest blockade started from 6 am on Sunday (3 December) and will end at 6 am on Tuesday (5 December). The opposition parties observed seven blockades prior to this to mount pressure on the Awami League government to quit power and hold the next general election under a non-partisan administration. The blockades have been marked by incidents of arson attacks and violence with poor public response to the street programme.

Mild, moderate tremors signal major one ahead

Bangladesh has become increasingly susceptible to earthquakes, with the fear escalating day by day as mild and moderate tremors are occasionally felt in the country – thereby numbering 11 in the last 11 months. Although these instances have not resulted in significant damages as of now, experts have expressed concerns about potential extensive damage in the event of a large-scale earthquake. Despite the absence of major earthquakes in recent times, Bangladesh remains at risk due to its geographical location.

Perspective Plan’41 projected 9pc growth in 20yrs

There were concerns about the potential challenges we might face in securing funds for the primary energy needed for power generation. Based on my assessment of our power sector planning, it appears that by the year 2023, we could be 90 percent reliant on imported energy. This implies that the expenditure on importing primary energy for power generation will escalate to USD 20 billion by then, compared to our current spending range of USD 10 billion to 12 billion.

Lack of connecting roads render culvert useless

A costly culvert bridge valued at Tk 30 lakh stands idle, bringing misery to the residents of three villages in Kashiani upazila of Gopalganj due to the absence of connecting roads. Recently, the demise of a local resident named Sahib Ali added to the woes as his funeral procession encountered a mishap on the way to the cemetery. Furthermore, villagers frequently experience minor accidents while traversing the culverts.

Passengers traveling on the Aricha-Kazirhat ferry route have raised concerns about being charged an extra fare. Ticket collectors from Subhana Enterprises, the ticket agent, are allegedly collecting Tk 40, which includes an additional Tk 4, instead of the fixed ferry fare of Tk 36 set by BIWTC on the Aricha-Kazirhat sea route. Complaints suggest that passengers who refuse to pay the extra amount are denied boarding, and instances of physical assault have been reported.

A makeshift and perilous bamboo bridge spanning a branch canal of the Padma River has become the sole lifeline for thousands of villagers in Zajira Upazila of Shariatpur District.
