Bangladesh Bank appoints Ernst & Young, KPMG to audit 6 troubled banks

ICT issues arrest warrants against Hasina, 10 others

The International Criminal Tribunal (ICT) has issued arrest warrants against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 10 others in connection with the enforced disappearances during the 15-year rule of the Awami League. A two-member tribunal led by Justice Golam Mortuza Mazumdar issued the order today (6 January) in response to a prosecution application.

Metro travel to be cheaper as VAT exemption reinstated

The government has reinstated Value Added Tax (VAT) exemption on metro rail tickets, ensuring passengers no longer have to bear the 15% VAT imposed in July, 2024. The National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued a special order on Monday announcing the immediate enforcement of the exemption and it will remain effective until December 31, 2025.

CA asks BEPZA to promote Bangladesh abroad

Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus today asked Bangladesh Export Processing Zones Authority (BEPZA) to promote Bangladesh abroad and bring more investments to the country`s industrial sectors. "Create a team for economic diplomacy and promote Bangladesh abroad," he told the BEPZA officials as the body submitted its annual report for the 2023-24 financial years to him at his office at Tejgaon, Dhaka.

No arrest in plain clothes: Home Adviser

The Detective Branch (DB) of the police will no longer be allowed to arrest suspects while in plain clothes, said Home Affairs Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Mohammad Jahangir Alam Chowdhury. Speaking to the press after inspecting the DB office in Dhaka on Monday, Adviser Jahangir Alam said that the police will no longer be permitted to make arrests without proper identification.

Khaleda to be directly admitted to London medical centre on arrival

BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia will be directly admitted to an advanced medical centre in London after arriving at Heathrow International Airport in the UK, her physician Dr AZM Zahid Hossain said today (6 January). Speaking at a press conference at the BNP Chairperson`s Gulshan office, he said a special Royal Ambulance from the Amir of Qatar will arrive at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport at 7:30pm today to transport Khaleda to London.

July Declaration to be discussed with political parties: Press Secretary

As part of the process to prepare a declaration on the July uprising based on a national consensus, the interim government will soon discuss it with political parties, Chief Adviser`s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam said on Sunday. "We can only say that it is being discussed and will be discussed with the political parties in the coming days. And we hope that you will see more progress on this issue in the future," he said, adding that they have received several phone calls regarding further progress on the July Declaration.

MDs of 6 banks, including 4 controlled by S Alam, sent on mandatory leave

The Bangladesh Bank has sent managing directors (MDs) of six banks, including four that were under the control of S Alam Group during the Awami League regime, on mandatory leave. Syed Waseque Md Ali, MD of First Security Islami Bank (FSIB), was the first to be sent on mandatory leave yesterday (4 January), according to an order.
