SC upholds removal of judges through Judicial Council

The Supreme Court has reaffirmed that judges can be removed through the Supreme Judicial Council. In a landmark ruling today, the six-member Appellate Division of the Supreme Court, led by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed, upheld its earlier decision that declared the 16th Amendment to the Constitution invalid. This ruling solidifies the authority of the Supreme Judicial Council in investigating allegations of incapacity or professional misconduct against judges.

BNP calls for relief support for flood-hit farmers in North, Mymensingh

Stating that farmers in the country’s northern and Mymensingh regions have been severely affected by the recent floods, BNP on Sunday demanded the government to provide comprehensive support to these farmers, including relief assistance, incentives and interest-free loans. Speaking at a press conference at the BNP`s Nayapaltan central office, party senior joint secretary Ruhul Kabir Rizvi alleged that the government has yet to implement any visible relief efforts to alleviate the suffering of flood victims in the affected regions.

Another 2.31 lakh eggs imported from India

Amid the spiraling prices of eggs at local markets, another shipment of 2.31 lakh eggs entered the country from India through Benapole land on Saturday night. Dhaka based importer ‘Hydro Land Solution’ brought it the consignment costing Tk 5.70 per egg. With a Tk 1.83 import duty at the land port, the buying price of each egg stands at over Tk 7.5. The government has permitted import of 4.5 crore eggs in phases.

Low pressure area likely to form within next 24hrs

A low pressure area is likely to form over the Eastcentral Bay and adjoining North Andaman Sea during next 24 hours commencing 9:00am on Sunday. A trough of low lies over North Bay. Weather may remain mainly dry with temporary partly cloudy sky over the country, according to a Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) update on Sunday morning.

Students on Sunday demanded that Feni Deputy Commissioner Musammat Shahina Akter be removed for her alleged role as an associate of killers during August 4 mass killing. Four more die of dengue; 1,121 hospitalised

Four additional deaths from dengue were reported in the 24 hours leading up to Saturday morning, bringing the total fatalities in Bangladesh this year to 241. During the period, 1,121 more patients were hospitalised with viral fever, according to the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS). Of them, 270 dengue patients were admitted in hospital
