Situation tense at Badda after students-police clash
A clash erupted between police and students of Brac University in the Badda area of Dhaka on Thursday when the students gathered there as part of the ‘complete shutdown’ programme. The situation turned worse as police fired several rounds of tear gas to disperse the students in the morning in front of the university campus. Niger floods toll increases, 53 dead, 18,000 affected
Flooding caused by heavy rains lashing Niger since June has killed 53 people and impacted 18,000, as the west African country grapples with the effects of climate change, a UN agency announced on Wednesday (17 July). An earlier interior ministry toll published on June 20 recorded 21 deaths and nearly 6,000 people affected nationwide. As of July 15, the floods had claimed 53 lives, impacting 2,501 households and a total of 18,098 people, according to a United Nations OCHA report sent to AFP on Wednesday.

Malaysia`s nearly 100-year-old former prime minister Mahathir Mohamad has been hospitalised for "continuous coughing", his aide told AFP Thursday.
