Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Monday (24 June) said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is likely to pay her bilateral visit to Beijing any day in between July 8 and July 11. "We expect that the upcoming Prime Minister`s visit to Beijing will significantly advance the development cooperation between Bangladesh and China," he told reporters after a meeting with the visiting Minister of the International Department of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee Liu Jianchao at a hotel in the city.

Flood-hit people in Sylhet face food, drinking water crisis

Although floodwater started to recede from many areas in the flood-affected area in Sylhet district, the victims were going through immense sufferings for want of food and drinking water. A total of 8.5 lakh people, including 15,000 in Sylhet city, are still stranded as the two major rivers of the district were flowing above the danger level in four points. According to the local administration sources, some 107 unions and eight wards of the city are still under water. Newborn’s abdomen cut during C-section at Faridpur

A newborn girl is in critical condition after her abdomen was cut during a C-section performed at Saudi-Bangla Private Hospital in Faridpur. The incident occurred on Saturday (22 June), when Mursheda Begum, a resident of Char Kamalapur area, underwent the procedure under the care of gynecologist Dr. Shirin Akhter. Mursheda Begum`s husband, Naib Ali, reported that shortly after the birth, the family noticed blood oozing from the newborn’s navel area. Despite informing the hospital authorities, their initial concerns were ignored, he said. As the bleeding intensified, Dr. Shirin was called in to stitch the cut near the navel.

1,301 deaths during hajj, mostly unregistered pilgrims

Saudi Arabia said Sunday that more than 1,300 faithful died during the hajj pilgrimage which took place during intense heat, and that most of the deceased did not have official permits. 2 youths crushed under the wheels of train

In separate incidents, two young men were killed after being hit by trains in the Kuril Bishwa Road area of the capital on Sunday (23 June). The deceased were identified as Mahmudul Hasan, 30, son of Shah Alam of Satkhira district and Tanjim Joy, 26, son of Babul Ahmed of Sadar upazila in Moulvibazar district. Tara Mia, sub-inspector of Airport Police Station, said Mahmudul died on the spot after being hit by a train around 10:20 am near Cantonment Rail Station while crossing the rail track.

15 lakh people stranded, flood in Sylhet, Sunamganj improves

Although flood situation in Sylhet and Sunamganj are improving in a slow pace, over 15 lakh people have been stranded in the two northwestern districts in Bangladesh. Residents and officials of local administrations said that overall flood situation is in improving trend in both Sylhet and Sunamganj region as no significant rainfall was recorded in the past couple of days.

Joint river management discussed during PM’s Delhi visit

Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud on Sunday (23 June) said Dhaka and New Delhi discussed on joint river management of 54 transboundary rivers, including the Teesta, during Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s India visit. “Discussions were held there (New Delhi) regarding the Teesta and joint river management… If we can establish a joint management of the rivers, it will benefit both countries,” he told reporters while responding to question from a reporter at the foreign ministry here.
