Budget allocation to fuel hike in power prices
In the proposed budget for the FY 2024-2025, Finance Minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali suggests a 5 per cent customs duty on equipment imports for Rampal Power Plant, rental power companies, and other private power generation firms. Currently, these companies enjoy duty-free imports of plant, equipment, and erection materials. As part of tax expenditure rationalization, the FM recommends reducing this benefit and imposing a 5 per cent customs duty. The proposal is set to remain in effect until June 30, 2028.

Proposed Budget: BNP to give reaction Sunday
BNP will give its formal reaction to the proposed national budget for fiscal year 2024-25 on Sunday (9 June). BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir along with the party’s standing committee members will come up with the party’s official reaction to the budget at a press conference, said party’s media cell member Sayrul Kabir Khan. The Election Commission has postponed the Baghaichhari Upazila Parishad election for the second time due to possible deterioration in law and order centering the polls. A notification signed by Md. Atiar Rahman, Deputy Secretary of the Election Commission, said that the Election Commission has postponed the election in Baghaichhari Upazila for the 2nd time apprehending deterioration in law and order during the election. Rangamati Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Hossain Khan said that the Baghaichhari Upazila Parishad election scheduled for June 9 has been postponed due to inclement weather and road and waterway blockades.

DNCC to designate roads for cycling twice a month: Atiqul
Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Md Atiqul Islam has said that specific roads in the DNCC area will be designated for cycling two days each month. He made the announcement while attending the "Pedal for Planet" cycling rally organised jointly by voluntary organizations Jaago Foundation and Volunteer for Bangladesh on Saturday from in front of the Sangsad Bhaban to Gulshan-2 intersection. The rally was organised to raise awareness about carbon emissions and environmental protection.

Civilian fatalities in Ukraine reached a record high in a year : UN
The civilian death toll in Ukraine last month rose sharply, to 174, which was the highest level in nearly a year amid an increase in missile and bomb strikes in populated areas around Kharkiv, the UN human rights office said on Friday (7 June). Overall, the May toll represented an increase of 31% from April and the highest since June 2023, according to the report from the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine.

William Anders, the former Apollo 8 astronaut died in plane crash
Retired astronaut William Anders, who was one of the first three humans to orbit the moon, capturing the famed "Earthrise" photo during NASA`s Apollo 8 mission in 1968, died on Friday (7 June) in the crash of a small aeroplane in Washington state. He was 90. NASA chief Bill Nelson paid tribute to Anders on social media with a post of the iconic image of Earth rising over the lunar horizon, saying the former Air Force pilot "offered to humanity among the deepest of gifts an astronaut can give."

Clash between Awami League factions leaves 18 injured
