Salaries, subsidies, interest payments to eat up 40pc
About 40 per cent of the allocation in the budget for the upcoming fiscal year 2024-25 will be spent on salaries and allowances of government employees, subsidies, and loan interest payments. This will make it difficult to increase the allocation for social safety net, health, and education sectors. According to the plan of the Ministry of Finance, the government can allocate Tk 3 lakh 14 thousand 700 crore to these three sectors from the total budget of Tk 7 lakh 96 thousand 900 crore.

Committee formed to investigate failure to send workers to Malaysia
A six-member probe committee has been established to investigate the failure of recruiting agencies to send workers to Malaysia by the May 31 deadline. The Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment Ministry announced the formation of the committee, which is led by an additional secretary from the ministry. The committee will examine why workers were not sent to Malaysia despite having received approval and smart cards issued by the Bureau of Manpower Employment Training (BMET), according to a revised notice issued on Wednesday (5 June).

Three dead in motorcycle-van collision in Khulna
Three people, including a driver, were killed in a head-on collision between a motorcycle and an engine-driven van in Paikgachha upazila of Khulna on Wednesday (5 June) morning.
