Different areas including Uttara Airport to Kakoli, Mirpur, Shewrapara, Kazipara, Agargaon, Bijoy Sarani, Rampura, Badda, Shyamoli, Manik Mia Avenue, and Mouchak were inundated, causing suffering to the residents.

Elections to 19 Upazila Parishads postponed

The Election Commission on Monday postponed the elections to 19 out of 109 Upazila Parishads slated for May 29 due to the landfall of cyclone Remal on Sunday (27 May). EC Secretary Md Jahangir Alam said this at a press conference in the Nirbachan Bhaban in the city’s Agargaon area. He said the EC and the field-level administration took preparations to conduct elections to 109 upazila parishads in the third phase of the sixth upazila parishad election on May 29 next.

Maritime ports of Chattogram, Cox`s Bazar, Mongla and Payra have been advised to lower cautionary signals as cyclonic storm Remal crossed the coastal areas. The severe cyclonic storm "Remal" has weakened into a deep land depression while moving northwards, said Bangladesh Meteorological Department in its 19th special bulletin on Monday (27 May). According to the bulletin, the storm moved northwards from Koyra, Khulna before weakening into a cyclonic storm and then weakening even further over Jashore and the adjoining area.

Over 100 shrimp enclosures in Khulna`s Koyra, Dacope and Paikgacha upazilas were washed away by tidal surges after cyclone Remal struck the Bangladesh coast on Sunday night. Besides, at least 30 villages were inundated after the collapse of dams in 9 places in these upazilas. A severe cyclone called `Remal` started crossing coastal regions of Bangladesh packing winds up to 120 kilometres per hour tonight while authorities managed to evacuate over 800,000 people to safety. "The cyclone has made the landfall and started crossing our Khepupara alongside India`s West Bengal coasts," a met office spokesman said. He added that the storm approached from Bangladesh`s southwestern coastlines and West Bengal`s Sagar Island and was proceeding towards northern direction and was "likely to cross the coastlines in next five to seven hours".
