The prime minister was addressing a programme marking the Great May Day on Wednesday at Bangabandhu International Conference Center in Dhaka.

NYPD continue to make detentions around Columbia University

The New York Police Department`s (NYPD) officers have forced pro-Gaza protesters out of a roadway in New York City and continue to make sporadic arrests. Media reported late on Tuesday (30 April) that the police detained nearly 100 people at Columbia University and declared the campus clear just before 11 p.m. local time (03:00 GMT on Wednesday). Special police units reportedly entered Hamilton Hall through a window using a truck and a ramp after 9 p.m. local time and detained some 40 people in the building`s first floor.

Very severe heat wave grips 7 districts: BMD

Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) on Wednesday (1 May) said Jashore, Kushtia, Chuadanga, Pabna, Rajshahi, Bagerghat and Satkhira have been experiencing extreme hot weather as ‘very severe’ heatwave sweeping over the districts. According to the regular bulletin of the Met office, “very severe heat wave is sweeping Jashore, Kushtia, Chuadanga, Pabna, Rajshahi, Bagerghat and Satkhira and severe heatwave is sweeping over the districts of Tangail, Faridpur, Gopalgonj, Narayangonj, Noagaon, Sirajgonj, Dinajpur and rest part of Khulna division.”

Southern China road collapse kills 19

At least 19 people died when part of a highway collapsed in southern China`s Guangdong province on Wednesday, state media reported. State broadcaster CCTV said a stretch of road between Meizhou city and Dabu county in Guangdong province caved in at around 2:10 am (1810 GMT). The incident caused 18 vehicles to become trapped and involved a total of 49 people, CCTV said. As of 11:45 am, "19 people have been confirmed dead, and 30 are receiving all-out emergency care in hospital", according to the broadcaster.

Miscreants gun down Awami League leader in Natore

A municipality-level leader of the ruling Awami League was gunned down by miscreants in Gopalpur municipality under Lalpur upazila of Natore Tuesday night. The deceased was identified as Md Manjur Rahman Manju, 45, vice president of the municipality unit of the AL and son of Abdul Mannan of Bahadipur village under the upazila. Lalpur police station’s Officer-in-Charge Nasim Ahmed confirmed the matter saying that four to five miscreants riding on motorbikes stopped in front of a shop in Azimpur Rail Station and fired in the head and stomach of Manjur around 11pm, leaving him killed on the spot.
