In a heartfelt tribute to the heroes of the 1952 Language Movement, Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud on Wednesday (21 February) articulated Bangladesh`s aspiration to accord Bangla the status of an official language of the United Nations. Speaking at a commemorative event for National Martyrs Day and International Mother Language Day at the Foreign Service Academy, Mahmud acknowledged the challenges ahead but emphasized the national dream.

The nation is set to observe `Amar Ekushey`, the Language Martyr`s Day (Shaheed Day) and the International Mother Language Day on Wednesday (21 February), marking the supreme sacrifice of the language heroes for upholding the dignity of mother tongue Bangla. The day will also be observed around the world as the UNESCO recognised the Ekushey February as the International Mother Language Day on November 17, 1999.

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) on Wednesday (21 February) paid homage to the 1952 Language Movement martyrs, marking Amar Ekushey, the Language Martyrs Day, and the International Mother Language Day. The party leaders and workers, led by its senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, reached the Central Shaheed Minar around 10:47 am after waiting for a long time and placed a wreath at its altar.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina tonight paid rich tributes to the martyrs of the historic Language Movement by placing wreaths at the Central Shaheed Minar marking ‘Amar Ekushey’ -- the International Mother Language Day and Shaheed Dibosh. They placed floral wreaths at the Central Shahid Minar here at one minute past midnight.
